The black grouse
The upper tree line, between the conifers and pastureland, is the habitat of the black grouse, a particularly fragile endemic bird. The male cock has black plumage with a blue sheen, wings that are brownblack featuring a white wingbar and a lyre-shaped tail, after which it is named. The female hen is brown and reddish, with black, white and grey bar- rings and a slightly forked tail. You might see black grouse in the Télé Mont Noble skiing area during the winter, although they are a protected species with their own protected area on the mountain.
