The oldest larch trees
In the forest of Les Bans, located above l’Inalp centre in Vernamiège, there are 3 larch trees that are older than the oldest prophets.
One was felled by lumberjacks for the 1964 national exhibition, for the purpose of displaying a cross-section more than 5.5 m in circumference. This enabled their age to be estimated at around 860 years old, as recognised by the Cantonal Forest Inspectorate. These are some of the oldest larch trees in Europe.
